Pepco Waterfront Substation

Washington, D.C.

As the Architect of Record, MGMA partnered with ABB and Coakley & Williams Construction to provide an award-winning Design-Build for the new Waterfront Substation in Navy Yard.  The unique site presented a number of challenges, both functional and aesthetic.  Situated within a mix of residential and commercial structures, including the adjacent Audi Field soccer stadium, the new facility needed to be sympathetic to the surrounding neighborhood and compliant with complex zoning requirements. Careful consideration was taken to design a structure that complements the architectural flavor of the immediate environment.

The clever use of materials conveys the facility’s function while defying the appearance of a conventional industrial substation. The façade incorporates precast panels with traditional brick and metal detailing and the use of windows and ornamental lighting encourages the cohesive styling for one of the largest indoor substations ever to be built.
